Armin Smailovic
 

studied at the “Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie” in Munich. He had his first job during the war in Croatia 1991-95. Since then, his documentary work is deeply involved in post-conflict societies and political issues. Next to his photographic projects and assignments, Armin co-directed two theatre plays based on his documentary projects "Srebrenica – I counted my remainng life in seconds..." (premiere in 2015) and "Atlas der Angst" (premiere in 2017) at the prestigious Thalia Theater in Hamburg. His reportage and portrait works were awarded among others, four times at Hansel Mieth Award (3x 2014 and 2017) including the Grand Prix in 2014, Award of the City of Munich for outstanding photographic accomplishments (2014), LEAD AWARD (silver medal reportage 2010, silver medal portrait 2013) and the 09. Marler Media Award for Human Rights 2016 by the German Section of Amnesty International .

He is a founding member of the „Fotodoks“ Festival for Documentary Photography in Munich and was co-curating until 2017.

Since April 2017 he lectures documentary photography at the university of applied sciences in Bielefeld.

 

He lives and works between Munich and Sarajevo.
